Monte Alban was carved out of the top of a mountain just east of Oaxaca de Juarez by the Zapotec people who lived there for over a thousand years until 850 AD when it was abandoned for reasons unknown.
(Did I take way too many photos? Possibly...but not likely)
As with most popular tourist destinations I think it's always better to hit it earlier in the day to beat the majority of crowds. Monte Alban is no exception. It was quite empty and peaceful walking around with the wind in the grass as our soundtrack.
